The Future: Robert Burns International Airport

Postby Aulyin2 » "Tue Mar 09, 2010 6:07 pm"

If tourism is the biggest industry in Scotland and Robert Burns is the biggest tourism money spinner in south west Scotland, and the Ayrshire airport is the biggest Gateway to SW Scotland for international tourists, then why don't we call our airport The ROBERT BURNS INTERNATIONAL Prestwick AIRPORT, ?
Especially when it's in the middle of Burns Corridor and only a couple of miles from the Bards birthplace, soon to witness the £22million Robert Burns Birthplace Museum.

So what's the opinion of people who work and use Ayrshire's Prestwick airport?

Prestwick Airport

Postby Aulyin2 » "Thu Mar 11, 2010 9:27 pm"

Quote: Prestwick is a Glasgow Airport, always has been, always will be. If the airport was to be renamed (which it wont!) then Glasgow Robert Burns International would be better.

I thought it was called Prestwick Airport up until very recently.
It's a pity people don't know where Ayrshire is.
Support your local airport.

Prestwick Airport

Postby Aulyin2 » "Mon Mar 15, 2010 11:30 am"

The connection has Burns International with Golf courses:
Prestwick, Royal Troon, Turnberry, Western Gailes, Southern Gailes, Dundonald, Kilmarnock, Irvine, Mauchline, New Cumnock, the planned Ayrshire etc... Machrihanish, Mach Dunes, Dunaverty, Machrie, Shiskine, Royal Portrush, etc... the list is amazing.

It's no real surprise that 'Burn's International' was the entry point for 240,000 plus euro golfers last year making it the busiest golf gateway in europe, ie 'The Heart of Links'. G.L.E.
Landing in Burns Corridor has the edge.

In last week's Ayrshire Post: Campaign to Re-name Prestwick Airport.
http://www.ayrshirepost.net/2010/04/16/ ... -26236631/

In this week's Ayrshire Post Bob Shields wrote "ANOTHER CAMPAIGN?"
He said that when he read of the new internet campaign to have Prestwick Airport re-named after Robert Burns that it reminded him of the last campaign to have Prestwick Airport re-named after "Rabbie two years ago".
That "the chances of me signing this petition are zero and slim. And slim just left town."
Bob tells his readers that nobody is going to chose to fly to Prestwick just because they like the name of the airport and it's just a "shallow, gimmicky sticker".

But less than two years ago, in the Daily Record on July 22, 2008, he had a piece "Air Fools Should Be Bard" published which said:
SOME numpty MSPs and airport bosses have decided not to change Glasgow Prestwick Airport's name to Robert Burns International.
They claim visitors "might not geographically place or connect with the Burns brand".
It's c**p.

Listen to West Sound Radio News on 1035AM at 10:00/11:00/12:00/1:00/2:00 or online:
http://www.westsound.co.uk/

"The fight has once again taken flight to have Glasgow Prestwick airport renamed to Robert Burns International.

"Campaigners have taken to social networking sites and created an online petition to gather support for the name change.

"Bosses at the Ayrshire hub rejected it during the year of the Homecoming-insisting the Bard would do little to attract tourists to the area.

"Colin Shearer's been backing the campaign....."

I don't believe enough has been done to make Ayrshire, as a whole, inviting to potential tourists.
When I went onto TripAdvisor I was disappointed to find "Ayr", "East Ayrshire", "North Ayrshire" and "South Ayrshire" links: none for "Ayrshire".
If we had an airport named after the Ayrshire Ploughman, perhaps it wouldn't be that long until Ayr became "The City of Ayr", Ayrshire & Arran, South West Scotland, instead of being in the shadow of the city of Glasgow.

THE £21MILLION ROBERT BURNS BIRTHPLACE MUSEUM opens soon.
http://www.ayrshirepost.net/lifestyle/l ... -26989977/

Where is it?

You know and I know but what about visitors to the area?

Alloway, near Ayr, Ayrshire, South West Scotland
It's 5 miles from THE ROBERT BURNS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Prestwick, Ayrshire.
